FAQs

WHAT IS HOT YOGA?

Hot yoga is simply a yoga practice done in a heated room. Our heated classes range from 32 degrees C to 40 degrees C. Class temperatures are set intelligently to help you sweat, detox, and move with a little more ease (but not to make you keel over or blow out your adrenal glands).

We use the latest and best-infrared heat technology to warm your body from the inside out (and provide a whole slew of other benefits – see below). Our classes vary in temperature to suit the intensity of the class. Most quickly find they love the warm hug of the hot room, but if you are more heat-sensitive check our schedule for lower temperature and unheated class options.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HOT YOGA?

Practicing in a heated room can enhance your yoga practice and provide a number of additional benefits, including;

Detoxification  – Sweating is nature’s detoxification. It stimulates the lymphatic system, which allows everyday toxins to be shed from the skin helping to cleanse and purify the body. Every time you practice hot yoga you’re helping cleanse your body from the inside out, and you’ll feel amazing for it.

Cardiovascular Function – Doing yoga in a heated setting elevates your heart rate making your body work harder. You get more of the benefits of a cardio workout than you would do yoga in a cooler setting.

Safe Flexibility  – Heat helps your body be limber, allowing you to work deeper and more safely in your poses while reducing the risk of injury.

Chill Out and Get Clear – For those with especially wandering minds, the intensity of heat can help demand presence at the moment and speed up your entry to the sometimes elusive “flow state” allowing you to detach from the stresses and strains of daily life.

More – Other benefits from yoga include greater resilience to stress, improved mood, improved sleep, increased strength, improved circulation, excess weight loss, fewer aches & pains, more patience, greater productivity, improved performance in other sports / activities, oh we could go on and on.

IS PEAK HOT YOGA THE RIGHT STUDIO FOR ME?

We hope so, but hey, maybe not. The best way to find out is to come in for a class and see for yourself. We have a range of classes on the schedule to suit a diverse group of yogis, from intense workout style classes to deeply restorative yin classes, for total newbies to seriously serious yogis.

We know first impressions are super important, but sometimes hot yoga is an acquired taste. We normally recommend trying out at least 3 classes before making a judgment call (for example, Heidi was a hot yoga disbeliever until class numero 4, after which she became a junkie – in the healthiest sense of the word). If you are new to our studio we definitely recommend you take advantage of our New to Us 2 WEEK INTRO Special 35$ for 14 days of unlimited classes!

But really, at the end of the day, we just want to see you doing yoga! So if Peak is not the right fit for you we are happy to point you to other amazing yoga studios in the area.

HOW MANY CALORIES WILL I BURN IN A HOT YOGA CLASS?

Yoga is about So. Much. More. than burning calories. But we get it, you’ve got fitness goals, and hot yoga can certainly help you get there. So to answer – it depends on a number of things including weight, build, and class type. Simply standing in a 40-degree room can burn 130 cals per hour. Hot yoga can burn 600 calories per hour plus.

Yin: 100-200 Cals (not bad for lounging around on your yoga mat for an hour)
Move&Melt: 200-300 Cals (the easiest workout you’ve ever done)
Base Hot Yoga: 400-600 Cals
Base Flow: 400-600 Cals
Peak Flow: 400-600 Cals
Peak Power: 500-700 Cals

WHAT IF I'M NOT FLEXIBLE?

Oh if you only knew how many times we’ve heard “I can’t do yoga, I’m too inflexible”. Flexibility is like strength aka, it’s completely trainable, it is not fixed. In fact, good news, if you are not flexible you stand to benefit THE MOST from hot yoga (although you’ll soon discover yoga can give you a lot more than just flexibility). Flexibility is also like strength in that it requires commitment; small continuous changes lead to compound effects over time. If you are inflexible we recommend committing to coming to class at least 2x a week, otherwise, you’ll be starting from scratch each time.

WHICH CLASSES ARE BEST FOR BEGINNERS?

All of our classes state what level they are designed for, choose an All Levels, or Newbie class to start. If you are new to yoga we recommend our Base Hatha, and if you are new to the heat and a little nervous about that aspect we recommend a Move&Melt or Yin class. Whatever you choose to take it easy, don’t expect yourself to be perfect (or even competent), feel it out, and let your teacher know so they can help guide you. Most importantly, don’t forget Rule # 62 – Don’t take yourself so damn seriously! It’s just yoga after all.

If you are extra unsure or want more focused attention we also offer 1 on 1 session to help you get started. 1 on 1 session can be booked online.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Well, you’re going to sweat, so wear clothes that are breathable and can move with you. For bottoms, most girls wear yoga tights and most guys wear shorts, for tops tank tops, or t-shirts work fine. Whatever you are comfortable in (think gym clothes). No shoes or socks required.

You’ll also need:

  • a yoga mat (available for rent – and free if it’s your first class)
  • a water bottle (available for rent, you can fill up from our fountains)
  • a yoga towel (if your mat gets slippery when sweaty, also available for rent)
  • a shower towel (available for rent)
  • a change of clothes for after class

Come well hydrated by drinking plenty of water before class.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR A CLASS?

Practicing on a full stomach can be uncomfortable (especially if you are subject to acid reflux or GERD). So we recommend saving your heavy meals for after class. A snack or light meal before is fine. Drink plenty of water beforehand and bring a water bottle to take water breaks throughout class.

HOW LONG ARE YOUR CLASSES?

Most classes run 60 minutes and our lunch hour classes are 45 minutes (designed to get you in, zen-ed, rinsed, and out, over your lunch break).

DO I NEED TO BOOK ONLINE?

No, but if you’re like us, and you like to schedule out your week you certainly can. While we do welcome walk ins, some classes book up in advance, so if you want to be sure you get a spot we recommend booking online.

You can book classes directly from our website or using the MOMENCE App.

ARE THERE SHOWERS?

Well, we’re not going to make you climb back into your car soaked in sweat! We have beautiful male and female change rooms each equipped with showers and body wash. So go ahead and get sweaty.

HOW OLD DO YOU NEED TO BE TO PRACTICE?

Anyone over the age of 14 is welcome in our classes. However, if you are 14-17 we require a guardian to sign off for you.

DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE CLASSES / CAN I RENT OUT THE SPACE?

We offer private and corporate classes in our hot room outside of our regular class schedule. Classes can be heated or unheated.

If you are interested scheduling a private or in renting the studio in another capacity please contact team@peakhotyoga.com
